The Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, together with consultancy firm ARCADIS, deployed MapTalk to involve residents in planning new cycling routes. The goal was to develop routes that are not only safe but also meet the wishes of cyclists.
Through the MapTalk platform, residents could indicate which routes they would like to use, where dangerous situations are and what improvements they would like to see. This has resulted in a wealth of local knowledge that would otherwise not have been available.
ARCADIS combined resident input with technical analyses to design optimal cycling routes. The result is a network of cycling routes that is widely supported by the community and practically feasible.
This project demonstrates how participation and technical expertise can reinforce each other. By involving residents early, better and more supported solutions have emerged.
